  • Support of the planning team in the preparation of the tender documents for timber construction
  • Implementation of PQM during execution

Project description
As part of a research project at ETH Zurich a new type of roof construction was developed. As a result, individual, small beams were laid with a robot to form a framework and nailed together. This meant that each beam could be joined together in a slightly offset manner, resulting in this full-surface supporting structure and undulating roof.

The Zeughaus building built in 1919 by Alfred Ramseyer and Fritz Hiller and the elongated storage building built in 1985 were fully renovated for their new owners, the cantonal police and other administrative departments of the Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. The timber construction of the storage rooms was statically reinforced. The head building of the five-storey building was completely gutted and fitted with new reinforced concrete walls and ceilings. The new threestorey annex (top floor in timber construction) was built on the existing cultural heritage area.

Project description
After a very short construction period, the finished building was
inaugurated on 29 May 2010. The dominant, angular, wooden building houses the fire brigade as well as the Wallisellen utility works with its offices, workshops and storage rooms. Thanks to the optimal room layout, both occupants are able to use the synergies, theory room, lounge and terrace without getting in each other’s way. The building meets the goals of the “2000-watt society”, as is evident from the thickly insulated walls, the visible building
services, the mixture of wooden and concrete materials and the photovoltaic system on the roof. The deadlines and construction costs were met.
