Project description
The 20.73m x 20.73m pavilion was designed by the famous artist James Turrell, which involves high visual demands. Both, the artists demands as well as the climatic conditions and wind loads through the location on the Fari Islands of the Maldives, made the project a unique challenge. The base of the pavilion measures 16.47m x 16.47m, which leaves the roof cantilevering by 2.13m on all four sides. To ensure the stability of the building, the vertical
studs of the four walls where connected through ironwood-braces to form shear walls. The high requirements for the perfectly-horizontal underside of the roof where accomplished through a load-bearing system of standing LVL-beams within the roof structure, which also enabled the opening in the middle of the roof for the perfect light incidence.
